Frequently Asked Questions

How much space does a campus sewage treatment plant need?

Less than most schools expect. The buried Johkasou SA range measures 1.65 × 1 × 0.98 m at 1 m³/d and needs only a small excavation pit — the ground above it can be planted, paved or used as a walkway. Larger SB units are Φ2.2 m cylinders, 5.3 to 11.5 m long. Containerised MBR units arrive as standard shipping containers and need a level foundation and a water and power connection, nothing more.

Can treated campus wastewater be reused?

Yes. Containerised MBR units produce effluent at BOD₅ 10 mg/L, ammonia-nitrogen 5 mg/L and suspended solids 5 mg/L, with faecal coliform below 50 CFU/100 mL after UV disinfection. That quality is suitable for landscape irrigation, toilet flushing and general campus cleaning rather than discharge.

Will it smell, or disturb classes and dormitories?

Buried units operate in a sealed underground environment that isolates both noise and odour, which is why they can sit close to teaching blocks and student housing. Containerised units are enclosed systems that minimise odour escape, and the MABR variant runs particularly quietly because it uses membrane oxygen transfer instead of blower aeration.

How is the system run during holidays when the campus is empty?

All units use PLC control with automatic inflow detection, which switches the blower into an energy-saving mode when load drops. The system supports unattended operation with remote monitoring and fault alarms pushed by SMS or WeChat, so no one needs to be on site during term breaks.

Can laboratory wastewater go into the same plant as domestic sewage?

It should not. Laboratory effluent carries chemical reagents and heavy metals that will damage the biology of a domestic STP. The containerised IWTP handles that stream separately through pH adjustment, coagulation, lamella clarification, sand filtration and ion exchange, bringing chromium to 0.5 mg/L, nickel to 0.1, copper to 0.3 and lead to 0.2 mg/L.
